What is a DOI?
The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a persistent identifier for journal articles (and often eBooks and their chapters). A DOI typically looks like this: 10.1109/5.771073
How does DOI enable Lean Library extension?
The Lean Library extension will identify DOIs within a page and then attempt to find you an alternative access path, if available through your university or through OpenAccess. You'll find a full description here.
How are DOIs identified on a page?
We utilise the meta-tags present in the source of a page (hidden from view) and in particular look for meta-tags like this:
<meta name="citation_doi" content="10.1016/j.scitotenv.2017.12.027">
Additional meta names we are looking for are:
'doi', 'dc.doi', 'dc.identifier', 'dc.identifier.doi', 'bepress_citation_doi', 'rft_id', 'dcsext.wt_doi', etc.
Some websites do not offer these meta-tags and for these, a sophisticated regular expression can be used.
If Library Library extension does not identify a DOI on a page
Please contact us at support@leanlibrary.com and provide us with an example of the page, the DOI present and we will look into this.
